Costas Schuler – The Mechanic
The Mercedes Pens art car is a 1981 Mercedes 300SD with over 300,000 miles on it; an amazing 30-year-old diesel car that just keeps going and going! Though he had no prior experience fixing cars, Costas Schuler started working on his out of necessity and a desire to keep this great art car on the road as long as possible. Parts and repair costs for a car like this are not cheap, but armed with Google, a box of tools, a mechanics outfit, rubber gloves and a lot of de-greaser, he has managed to keep it going for the last 12 years. Oh yes, and asking a lot of people a lot of questions:)
Time has passed since his first oil change, and now he has bigger and more difficult repairs under his belt:
- Valve adjustments
- Compression tests
- Fuel injector overhaul
- Dashboard removal
- Alternator replacement
- Belt replacement
- Radiator replacement
- Radiator hose replacement
- Water pump replacement
- Brakes and brake hoses replacements
- Air filter mount repair
- New Motor mounts
- New oil cooler
- Injector purge
(He doesn’t mind getting greasy for a good cause:)
He also made a few repairs on the family Chrysler Town and Country:
- Radiator replacement
- Instrument cluster resolder
- Water pump replacement
- New Belts
- Alternator replacement
- Spark plug replacement
- Steering pump replacement (…in the works)
